Earth Day – April 22, 2021

The first Earth Day was created by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who was concerned about the impact of human activity on the planet. In the wake of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California in 1969, Nelson organized a teach-in on college campuses to create a stronger consciousness about air and water pollution. The day selected for the teach-in was April 22nd, which eventually became Earth Day and garnered national attention, rallying huge, organized protests that worked to fight against the negative impact of industrial development on the planet. The year 2020 commemorated 50 years of Earth Day celebrations.
A great video, “When the Earth Moves” created by PBS on Senator Nelson can be seen here.   Below, you might enjoy some #earthdayhacks :

1.  Make an Earth Day window sign
2.  Reduce/Reuse plastic

  • Always have the blue recycling bin in your home next to all major trash receptacles and use it!!!!
  • Make a habit of saying “no straw please” at restaurants
3.  Plant a Forest with the Canopy Project
4.  Watch the Documentary on Senator Nelson (find it here) or any of the below films.
  • David Attenborough: A Life On our Planet (Netflix) At the age of 94, Attenborough discusses his life on our planet and his concerns for what the environment will look like moving forward if humanity does not make drastic changes.
  • The Human Element (Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, YouTube)  Environment photographer James Balog showcases how the four elements, earth, wind, fire, and water are being transformed by a fifth element, the human element.
  • The Lorax (Netflix) Twelve-year-old Ted lives in a city with no nature due to the greediness of the Once-ler, the leader of the town. When searching for a rare flower for the girl he loves, Ted runs into the Lorax, a mystical guardian of the forest who teaches him the origin of how greed overtook nature and how humanity has a chance to save it. Great movie to explain the importance of protecting our planet to kids.
