AJR: What inspired you to dive into your Native American personal history?
CQ: Attending a Lakota Sundance 14 years ago was a life-changing experience. Despite living in extreme poverty, the Lakota people demonstrated extraordinary spiritual abilities, and the ceremony was both breathtaking and deeply moving. During the Sundance, a medicine man told me that my deceased grandmother’s spirit had visited him and revealed she was Native American. At first, I didn’t believe him—I had always thought she was 100% Irish—but I later discovered it was true. This stunning revelation set me on a journey to uncover my family history and learn about the Lakota teachings and traditions.
AJR: What inspired you to distill your learnings into #AwakentheSacred?
CQ: I became friends with a wonderful Lakota spiritual leader named Basil Braveheart. Basil is a healer and a teacher – probably the most interesting and colorful character I have ever met. I witnessed him performing ceremonies and incredible healings, and his teachings, humility, and healing abilities showed me the transformative power of Lakota ceremonies and beliefs, and I felt compelled to share his wisdom with the world.
AJR: What is your greatest hope for readers of #AwakentheSacred?
CQ: My hope is that readers will approach this book with an open mind and explore the Lakota healing strategies for themselves. The Lakota embody the principle of “knock, and the door shall be opened to you.” Through their powerful prayers and ceremonies, they know how to ‘knock’ with great intensity—and the door always opens. This is the central theme of the book: by ‘knocking’ with intention through prayer and ceremony, you can truly “Awaken the Sacred.”
