Reflecting on the life of Dr. King

“Love is the greatest force in the universe. It is the heartbeat of the moral cosmos. He who loves is a participant in the being of God.” The iconic civil rights leader wrote this in a rare handwritten letter he penned in the mid-1960s.

I’ll never forget when Audrey was seven, she relayed that in the weeks leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she and her fellow second-graders completed a “kindness” module in Dr. King’s honor. That Dr. King’s life and legacy continue to define our nation is something for which I have profound gratitude.

As I reflect upon the impact of Dr. King’s service and legacy as the then youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize winner and his iconic “I Have a Dream” address- his wisdom of kindness and compassion and empathy and boldly standing up for what you believe in still rings as true and as necessary as ever.

Above and beyond all else, I agree with Dr. King wholeheartedly that “if you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

My wish to our country and the world this Martin Luther King Day is that we keep dreaming, we stay empathic, we boldly demand equality for all….and that we keep moving.
