#In Honorarium: Mike Grgich (1923-2023)

In 1976 Mike Grgich shocked the world. In a blind tasting, in Paris, of the best white wines from around the globe it was Mike’s 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that won the day. Perhaps more than any other single event, winning the Paris tasting put the Napa Valley on the map as a first-class wine destination. A year after that, in partnership with the Hills family, Mike opened Grgich Hills Cellars and crafted Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons that embodied his style and skill. Mr. Grgich was iconic for his beret and willingness to walk the vineyard with his guests. I have too many fond memories of visiting Grgich Cellars, and taking friends to see Mr. Grgich, to count. He died last Week at 100 years of age. Clearly the wine he made fueled his longevity. As we end the year, I wanted to honor Mr. Grgich’s legacy in light of his recent passing and encourage you to celebrate the holidays and new year with wine and his namesake.
