Audience Questions Spotlight.

One of the most rewarding aspects of going on #hacksthetour has been receiving insightful questions from audiences across the country. Last week, I had an opportunity to spend an hour with the talented women and men of Bank of America. Here are some highlights from our conversation:

Grateful to Kelly Demers for moderating a rich discussion on #hacksthebook at Bank of America.

Q: How do you juggle being a mother, your civic engagements, publications, and being a CEO?
A: I strive to widen the aperture of time and measure success over a period of days or even weeks. I try to nail two stakeholders a day: today, I’m a good mom and a good CEO. On days when I have to catch a red-eye for work, I’ll focus on being a good CEO and a good wife. If I tried to accomplish everything at once, I’d wake up feeling like a failure every day.

Q: Will you share a bit about your learnings around being a good mentee and mentor?
A: My main advice on mentoring is make it easy for the mentor: work around their needs and their schedule. And for mentors: do what you say you’re going to do, ALWAYS.

Q: We are interested in hearing how you support other women in business.
A: There is a saying that your checkbook should capture your beliefs. For me, that means supporting organizations like Impact Engine here in Chicago and Leadout Capital: both are committed to supporting women-led businesses and leveling the playing field.
