What is Your North Star?

I was recently advised by veteran CEO Coach and fellow Stanford GSB alum, Lew Jaffee, that the “North Star Exercise” is a great exercise to work on with the CEOs that I coach through my board work. In reviewing it this week, it reminded me that we can all benefit by taking the time to write down answers to these provocative questions at the start of any calendar year, and of course, 2023.
 
I am sharing them with you readers of #hacksthenewsletter in hopes that these #northstar questions will inspire your self-reflection as much as they did mine.

 

  1. What do you want?
  2. What do you have to do to get what you want?
  3. What could get in the way of getting the results that you want?
  4. How do you hold yourself accountable to get the results that you want?
  5. I need to stop doing these:

  7. I will continue doing these:
  8. What is success 3 years from now? And Why?
  9. What is success 1 year from now?
  10. Values & Mission: Does your vision statement inspire BIG thinking to drive BIG growth and does your mission statement tell your team and the world why doing what the company does matters?
